Conditions favourable, monsoon to arrive in Mumbai in 2-3 days: IMD

With the development of favourable conditions, monsoon is slated to sweep across Mumbai and its neighbouring districts over the course of next two to three days, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.

Last week, the IMD had announced that monsoon had started to move towards northern Maharashtra from Ratnagiri, and it was expected make landfall in Mumbai between June 18 and 21.

Following this delay, the monsoon is slated to advance further into the state over the next couple of days.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD, Mumbai said, “The conditions are looking favourable and monsoon is expected to reach the southern peninsula in the next two to three days.”

While the official date of monsoon’s onset is June 11, its landfall was delayed this year, owing to the Cyclone Biparjoy brewing over the Arabian Sea.

“The delay in the arrival of monsoon is a result of Cyclone Biparjoy. During a cyclone, all winds build around it thereby diverting all the moisture present in the atmosphere. The advancement of monsoon depends on south westerly winds”, added Nair.

According to meteorologists, however, the westerly as well as south westerly winds are weak thereby further stalling of the monsoon showers.

While the city awaits the arrival of the monsoon, certain areas of the city recorded light rains during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

Even as the city experienced sporadic spells of rain, the temperature languished over 33 degrees Celsius — 2 degrees Celsius above normal.

While the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 33.9 degrees, Colaba observatory recorded 33.7 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the IMD issued a bulletin on Monday stating that Mumbai, Palghar, Thane and several other districts of Maharashtra, are set to witness light spells of rains over the course of the next five days between Monday and Friday (June 23).

Furthermore, the officials issued a yellow alert indicating thunderstorm coupled with gusty winds and lightening in isolated pockets of Sangli, Sholapur, Nanded, Latur, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal.
The bulletin also sounded heatwave alerts in several districts of Vidarbha region.
